Council approves new site for construction of Zion Regional Medical Center in Desert Color neighborhood of St. George – St George News


ST. GEORGE- A new hospital is planned for the Desert Color area off Interstate 15 following a vote by city officials approving a requested zoning change last Thursday.

The St. George City Council unanimously approved an Atkin Interchange Area Area Plan Amendment authorizing a proposed hospital and related facilities on 17 acres located between I-15, the Southern Parkway and the Desert Color Parkway.

“I’m really excited for this,” Councilwoman Michelle Tanner said. “I have to say it’s long overdue.”

Scheduled to be built in phases, the first phase of the Zion Regional Medical Center project will see the construction of a two-story, 80,000 square foot facility with 24 patient beds, four operating rooms, 12 operating bays emergency room and an imaging and support laboratory. services. A helipad for a medical helicopter will also be built.

The second phase will expand the hospital to a four-story structure with an increase to 148,000 square feet and a total of 88 patient beds and expanded wards.

Two medical office buildings, one three-story and the other four-story, are planned for the third phase of the project and will include underground parking.

General access to the new hospital will be via Desert Color Parkway.

The hospital system supposed to manage the new hospital once it is operational is based in Tennessee. college health. The company has 12,000 employees at 21 hospitals in 13 states, including Utah and Nevada, where it operates Mountain West Medical Center in Tooele and Mesa View Regional Hospital in Mesquite, Nevada.

If the Zion Regional Medical Center sounds familiar, that’s because it was originally planned to be built on 41 acres of land along 3050 East behind Home Depot and Walmart stores in Washington City.

City Council approved a zone request last December allowing the construction of a hospital.

Councilwoman Natalie Larsen told St. George News that complications with the original location, such as traffic access and power availability, obviously forced the developer to consider a new location for the proposed hospital.

Hospital services in St. George and the surrounding area have been provided by Intermountain Healthcare for many years through St. George’s Regional Hospital, formerly known as Dixie Regional Medical Center.

Prior to the approval of the new Desert Color Hospital along I-15, another hospital, this one to be operated by Steward Health Care, was approved for the city of Washington just off the Washington Parkway/I-15 interchange.
