It is the first fisherman’s house in Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS, November 3, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The first Fisher House in Louisiana was dedicated today by the VA Deputy Assistant Secretary of Health for Operations RimaAnn O. NelsonPresident of the Fisher House Foundation David A. Coker and Director of Southeastern Louisiana VA Health Care System Fernando Rivera. The new home began serving families of veterans in December 2020.

The nearly 15,000 square foot Fisher House provides free lodging for veteran and military families, allowing them to be close to loved ones at their most stressful times, while they receive medical care. This fisherman’s house has already served hundreds of veteran families since it opened. At full occupancy, it can save military and veteran families more than half a million dollars each year. But more importantly, the New Orleans Fisher House allows veterans to receive care they could not easily access in the past without a place to lodge their loved ones.

“As a VA nurse myself, I know how important families are in the healing process and how important Fisher House is in supporting that mission,” Nelson said. “Keeping families together and keeping families close to our veterans while they undergo treatment is very important, so thank you, Fisher House, for partnering with the VA.”

This fisherman’s house is part of a network of 93 houses located across the country and in Germany and the UK. It is located next to the main entrance to the VA Medical Center.

“It is an honor to finally open the New Orleans Fisher House. Since opening in December 2020in the midst of the pandemic, this home has had a big impact,” Coker said. “I applaud the staff at Fisher House and the VA team for all they have done to support the community during this difficult time. and I’m proud to know this home will be there to support veteran families for many years to come.”

The New Orleans Fisher House has 16 accessible suites, a spacious kitchen, large common living room, dining room and family room, laundry room and a common patio. The home was donated to VA upon completion as part of the public-private partnership between the Fisher House Foundation and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

“VA and the Fisher House Foundation share a common mission to keep military and veteran families together while their loved one receives treatment at VA,” Rivera said. “We recognize that family and loved ones are an essential member of the treatment team. The Fisher House has been a tremendous resource for veterans in the Southeast Louisiana and beyond.”

The Fisher House Foundation proudly acknowledges the generosity of the following contributors for their extraordinary support to our military and veteran families: 84 Lumber Company, Boysie and Joy BollingerEnterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation, Friends of the Fishermen’s House of South LouisianaShipley Foundation, and the many gifts of a grateful nation.
