MercyOne Elkader Medical Center Named Iowa Level IV Trauma Care Facility of the Year



Elkader, Iowa; September 15, 2022 – MercyOne Elkader Medical Center was named Iowa’s Level IV Trauma Care Facility of the Year. This honor is awarded to a Tier IV trauma facility based on its policies, performance improvement practices, educational activities, and overall involvement in trauma initiatives statewide.

The announcement was made on September 9, 2022, at the State of Iowa Trauma & Preparedness Conference, where the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) pointed out that although the MercyOne Elkader is small, it exemplifies the meaning of maintaining a successful trauma program. The Level IV Trauma Program has had over two decades of perfect and near perfect condition check reports.

IDPH commended Trauma Program Manager Natalie Shea, who has shown extraordinary leadership since the Iowa Trauma System was established in 1999, and Medical Director of Trauma, Dr. Jeffery Messerly, who brought valuable experience to the establishment and continued efforts to maintain the strong program established by his predecessor, Dr. Clark Williams.

Local EMS services, emergency department providers, ancillary services and the administrative team were also recognized for their contribution to the trauma center, which contributes to the overall success of the program, which has gradually become stronger. over the years.

MercyOne Elkader Medical Center CEO Brooke Kensinger thanked MercyOne Elkader colleagues for their hard work.

“When the team learned that they had won this award, they were so proud, thrilled and honored because they have put such tremendous effort into our trauma program. I want to thank Natalie who has been with us for over 42. and has led the trauma program since its inception. I would also like to thank Dr. Jeff Messerly and Dr. Clark Williams and our EMS Manager, Chris Dahlstrom, for their leadership and commitment over the past five years. Together, we have transformed the way we provide patient care in emergency rooms and EMS,” she said.
