Practitioners from the country’s medical laboratories have been rewarded for their support for the medical profession, particularly in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic.

About 21 laboratories were awarded at the inaugural Ghana Medical Laboratory Awards over the weekend.

Korlu-bu University Hospital won the award for best public health medical laboratory center, Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) won the award for best public health laboratory center, and MDS Lancet won the award for laboratory center of the decade.

FDA Director General Mimi Delese Darko was named CEO of the Year.

The awards were under the auspices of Afrimeia Galaxy in conjunction with the Health Colleges Regulatory Agency (HEFRA).

Speaking at the event, National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) Chief Executive Bernard Okoe Boye praised medical laboratory practitioners for the role they have played in the fight against Covid-19 .

“Without medical laboratory practitioners, we will be in hot waters, especially in the fight against Covid-19,” he said.

The NHIS boss also instructed them to uphold integrity in the performance of their duties and upgrade to meet international standards.

Dr. Okoe Boye also congratulated Afrimedia Galaxy, organizer of the awards, for recognizing the hard work of medical laboratory practitioners in the country.

The Acting Director of the Institutional Care Division of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Lawrence Ofori-Boadu, said that they recognize medical laboratory practitioners in the country, contrary to claims that they have been relegated to the background.

This, he said, is because medical laboratory practitioners are very important players in the health sector.

Dr Ofori-Boadu thanked them for “holding their heads high” in Ghana’s fight against the dreaded Covid-19 pandemic.

For his part, the executive director of Afrimedia Galaxy, Joseph Egyir Sarfo said he was motivated by the central role played by medical laboratory practitioners in the health sector.

“Without the diagnosis of medical laboratory practitioners, physicians can do nothing hence the need to appreciate and recognize their good work.”

Mr. Egyir Sarfo said they only awarded 21 people due to resource constraints but hopes to get more sponsorships to expand it in the following years.
